At first, there was just one breed. Today, the Jack Russell terrier, the Parson Russell terrier and the Russell terrier are often mistaken for one another because of their similarities and origins. All three originate from dogs bred by Reverend John “Jack” Russell.

The first Jack Russells were quite tall dogs (35cm) but during the years the breed has changed, and there are now two distinct varieties that are recognised as separate breeds – the Parson Jack Russell and the Jack Russell Terrier. There are three coat varieties, a smooth coat, a broken coat and a rough coat.

Rough Coat

The hair is longer than on a smooth or broken coat. A rough coat requires more alterations than a broken coat to be ready for the show ring. A rough coat should not be soft or wooly - it should be harsh to provide protection from the elements.

Though you might hear three different names, there are only two distinct dog breeds. The Jack Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier are the same breed—the dogs were first called Jack Russells, but the name was changed by the American Kennel Club to Parson Russell Terrier.

John Russell, an avid hunter who created the breed. Though it is not known which dogs he crossbred, it is believed that Bull Terriers and Beagles were among the breeds used.

The Parson Russell has a relatively square outline, with a body about as long as the dog is tall. Compared to the Jack Russell Terrier, the Parson Russell has a longer head and a larger chest along with overall a slightly larger body size.
