A 6-Step Guide to Selling on Craigslist (2021 Edition) (3)

During college, I was always looking for extra money to fund my Starbucks addiction.

And like most over-caffeinated college students, my schedule didn't leave much room for part-time work.

That's why Craigslist was one of my favorite buzzwords. You don't need to open an account, you can sell almost anything, and there are almost no fees to sell on Craigslist, unless you're selling a car or a service.

Even with the rise of Facebook Marketplace and other buy and sell apps, Craigslist still averages 50 billion page views per month.[1]

If you want to make money from home by tidying up or flipping items, you should know how to sell on Craigslist.

How to Post and Sell on Craigslist in 6 Easy Steps

A 6-Step Guide to Selling on Craigslist (2021 Edition) (4)

If you've purchased anything from the site, you know that the key to posting on Craigslist is to be concise. Many sellers skip key steps that severely limit the reach of their post and the speed of selling their item. If you follow all the steps, you will have an advantage over those who don't.

Step 1: Price research.

If you want to learn how to sell fast on Craigslist, start your listing at a competitive price. You can get an idea of how much someone will pay for your item by searching other sites to see how much it has sold for recently.

eBay lets you do this with the "Items Sold" and "Items Completed" filters, and Facebook Marketplace lets you know if an item has had a lower price.

If your goal is not to sell the item quickly, set a higher price to give yourself room to negotiate. Craigslist buyers are used to haggling, so add an extra $5 or $10 for cheaper items and 10% for more expensive items.

Step 2: Take good photos.

A 6-Step Guide to Selling on Craigslist (2021 Edition) (5)

You can add up to 12 images to your Craigslist post, and you should use as many as possible. The first image is the main photo and should show the most attractive product photo. In addition to images from all angles, the following additional images are possible:

  • A scale photo - Use a more common item to give you an idea of how big or small your item is. Do not use an object that may vary in size.
  • Any imperfections - This will help buyers avoid surprises and sell your products faster. It's a waste of time trying to hide something that isn't true.
  • Close-up - If there are important serial or model numbers, people want to know.

You don't need a fancy camera to take good photos. Take your photos in natural light, remove frame clutter and make sure the background contrasts with your subject.

Step 3: Write a detailed description.

First, your post title should be worded in such a way that it is easy to find in a search. It's the first thing buyers see. So think about the phrases they are searching for and use those words in your title. You can provide more details in the description.

Keep your description short but informative. Use bullet points and short sentences. First, list all important information such as dimensions, make, model, serial number, age, any pets in the home, defects, etc. can quickly understand your listing.

Also include a reason why you are selling the item. Whether you're downsizing, upgrading or moving, buyers will trust you more if they know why you're selling an item. You want to know if you are selling it because of defects or imperfections or because you simply don't want or need it anymore.

In addition to a good description, you also need to be as specific as possible when choosing your item category. Shoppers often only search within a specific category. Therefore, if your product is in a more general area, it may be difficult for buyers to find your listing.

Step 4: Choose a communication method.

Once your listing is online, you'll need a way to contact potential buyers. You can use your personal email address or phone number, but Craigslist recommends using the two-way email relay service for communication. If you use it, email responses are covered by both seller and buyer to prevent fraud and spam.

If you prefer to communicate via text messages, you can secure your phone number by signing up to communicate using a free Google Voice number.

Step 5: Avoid scams.

Unfortunately, Craigslist scams have become all too common. Scammers spend a lot of time creating fake IDs and documents to steal your belongings and money.

If you want to learn how to sell stuff on Craigslist without getting scammed, always be on the lookout for offers that sound too good to be true. These popular scams include:

  • Request payment by bank transfer or money order - Scammers will send you a fake bank transfer or money order, usually by Western Union, in the hope that you won't notice the forgery until you ship the item.
  • Fake PayPal Confirmation – Scammers send a fake payment confirmation email that appears to be from PayPal, but no money has actually been deposited into your account.

you can avoidcraigslist scamtreat people personally, only accept cash and never give out your financial details to strangers. If you take cash with you, examine it carefully to see if it's genuine. If you're selling a large item like a car, try to find it at a bank or ATM to watch the person actually withdraw money.

Step 6: Create a safe meeting point.

Never give your home address to a buyer and never agree to go to someone's home alone. If youthey sell onlineor items small enough to carry in public during the day.

they are police stationsSafeTrade Stations, and Starbucks usually has a lot of foot traffic. If you must meet at night, make sure it's at a store that's open late, has bright parking lights and security, like Walmart. For items too large to remove from the house, have someone with you so you are not alone.

6 tips on how to get the most money for your product

A 6-Step Guide to Selling on Craigslist (2021 Edition) (6)

Success on Craigslist doesn't end with a good post. There are many other Craigslist selling tips that will help you sell your items faster and make more money.

1. Lot Item.

If you have similar items, sometimes they sell better together than individually. This is especially true for baby items. Busy parents are much more likely to buy "too many" clothes and toys for a certain age group than to buy them all individually.

It even works with large objects. Jillian Sirianni, its moderatorPodcast Frugal Friends, repairs furniture and sells it on Craigslist.

(Video) How To Post On Craigslist In 2020 Step By Step Tutorial

"I think listing a chair or a side table doesn't sell," Sirianni said. "But if I sell a pair of side tables or a set of four chairs, they sell more easily."

2. Posting on other websites.

Sales platforms have unique target groups. Therefore, it is important to offer your articles on as many platforms as possible. When you figure out how to sell stuff on Craigslist, other sites aren't much different.

Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Buy and Sell Groups, and OfferUp are some of the other places you should post your items. Most Craigslist postings are online for 45 days, but postings on these other sites do not expire, so take advantage of them.

3. Lower the price.

If it's been several weeks and you haven't received any offers, it's time to lower your price. If you're pricing your item with a view to negotiating, try to lower it or slightly above what you want to get for it and wait for it to drop some more.

This is more common when youthey sell used furnitureor other large and expensive items. Don't be afraid to drop the price to sell your items.

4. Respond to messages quickly.

Craigslist buyers are often looking for something specific, and they need it now. If you don't respond to them quickly, they will likely buy the same product from another responsive seller.

5. Share your listing.

Once your listing is online, drive traffic. Share your entry on social media and ask friends and family to share. You can also post it in appropriate discussion forums, such as your neighborhood Facebook group or NextDoor.com.

When you're ready to ship your product, try showing your ad in different situations. Avoid copying and pasting the listing as it will look like spam on Craigslist. Change it a bit and repeat that you will send the item.

6. Renew your subscription.

Articles on Craigslist are displayed in the order they were posted. If you list a popular item, update the listing regularly. Craigslist allows you to repost an ad within 48 hours of posting, effectively placing it at the top of the category and expanding your reach to a new set of buyers.

Set a calendar reminder on your phone to watch the ad every few days.
